Posted December 12, edited. Luckily the Corel contour tool is more sophisticated these days regarding nodes but the benefit of that functionality is still very useful. In the animation below, a user creates several points and Affinity Designer draws curves between them using smart nodes.

Most likely the issue is a different orientation of those two objects. Note: This is not a unique problem to Affinity Designer. Vector shapes are a sequence of nodes — those little circles and squares when you switch to the Node tool. No angle means a straight line [the circle will be a square].

The sequence clockwise or counter-clockwise of these nodes is the orientation. The stroke goes from thick to thin by adjusting the stroke pressure. Duplicate the line and select a node.

What does that mean to closed shapes like circles? Flip the duplicate horizontally. Afterwards, convert both to shapes to curves. A little red line appears at the top node — which also has a red rather than white outline. Even though this is one curve and the nodes show the fill is black where it should be transparent. It seems to happen more frequently with fonts.

The inside cutouts of letters like B or b or overlapping extensions in handwritten fonts. I have encountered the issue with stock art as well. So, before pulling you hair out and wondering why something as simple as a substract is no longer working, try to change the vector orientation.

It might be a possible fix to the issue. Good luck! Note: Eventually, I will write a version of this post for Inkscape — as it has been a common issue in the facebook groups I frequent. Check again in a little bit. Could also be that some of the problems are related to Affinity Designer bugs.

Vector Orientation — understanding a frequent problem Affinity Designer Tutorial A very common question on social media groups for vector art are problems with substraction and union due to vector orientation. Switch to the node tool and select all nodes. This is the starting node and the red line indicates the orientation of the curves. The problem comes when you combine objects with different orientation. Using the node tool, select on node in the V and click on reverse. The orientation of the letter changes to counter clockwise and the letter becomes a cutout.

Repeat this for the bottom right corner. When Break curve is applied to the second node, the rectangle splits in half. Each half is placed on its own layer.

Step 3 – Close the paths of each object With the rectangle cut in half we need to close the paths. Click on the one triangle then click on the Node Tool to activate. Select a corner node then click Close Curve top of the screen. The path will be closed and you have now have two triangles. Step 4 – Add nodes for more slicing options The shape has been sliced with nodes that were automatically placed.

But what if you want to slice areas that don’t have nodes? Add a node with a quick easy click that can be placed anywhere you want. Select one of the triangles and click on the Node Tool. Move your mouse along one side of the triangle. The mouse icon will change to an arrow with a curved line.

As you move the mouse, a line will appear. Where this line appears click to add a new node. Repeat steps to break nodes apart and close paths. For each area that is sliced a new layer is created.

You can edit each new object independently. Each shape’s stroke, color and size can be edited or you can also put your text in shapes. The creative possibilities are endless.
