You also do not see any of the Ribbon tabs when your are in Backstage view. Pressing Esc returns you to the document view in the tab that you were viewing last. If you don’t see your tab’s controls chances are that you have minimized the Ribbon. There are screenshots from the Backstage view at the bottom of this page. Here is a sample of a minimized Ribbon. In Word or later, there is an additional switch that can cause it to entirely disappear until you move your cursor to the top of the screen.
That is the AutoHide option. The control for this is an arrow in a box at the top-right corner of the window by the X to close a document. It gives you your document in print mode with the rulers. Word repackages the ribbon tabs to fit the available space. In the wider version, it gives more space to the Styles Gallery. In the narrower version some buttons shrink or lose captions. The combination of screen size and resolution determines what you will see, so your ribbons may not look exactly like any of the ones shown here. In Word introduced “New Experiences” This changed the ribbon giving more rounded areas and messing up the Styles Gallery. At the time of this writing, it is possible to reject them and retain the old look with the more useful [Quick] Styles Gallery. Word Online is a different program.
It looks much the same but has fewer features. Word in late – likely to be ‘s Insert – note that Feedback smiley face no longer there – it has been moved to under File tab. The Store icon has been changed to Get Add-Ins. It serves the same function.
Note the addition off 3D Models and Icons under Illustrations. WordArt has been a component of Word for some time and continues under the Insert Tab. However, its appearance differs. This changed dramatically in Word Note, that this is in a document in Word native.
If the document is in Word Select the Move Up or Move Down arrow until you have the order you want. You can hide both custom and default tabs. You cannot hide the File tab. In the Customize the Ribbon window, clear the check box next to the default tab or custom tab that you want to hide. You can add custom tabs or groups to put additional commands on the ribbon, or replace default tabs with your own versions.
Custom tabs and groups have Custom after the name in the Customize the Ribbon window, but the word Custom does not appear in the ribbon. Right-click the new group, choose Rename , and type a new name or add an icon. However, you can hide a default group and make a custom group with the commands that you want to replace the default group.
In the Customize the Ribbon window, choose the default tab where you want to add the custom group. Type a name for the new group and select an icon to represent the new group when the ribbon is resized. Choose the command that you want to add to the custom group, and then select Add. To add commands to a group, you must first add a custom group to a default tab or to a new custom tab.
Only commands added to custom groups can be renamed. Default commands appear in gray text. You can’t rename them, change their icons, or change their order. In the Choose commands from list, choose the list you want to add commands from, for example, Popular Commands or All Commands. Note: You can also drag and drop a command into to a custom group. In the Customize the Ribbon window, choose the command that you want to move.
In the Customize the Ribbon window, choose the command that you want to remove. In the Customize the Ribbon window, click the command that you want to rename. To hide the labels for the commands added to a custom group, right-click the group, and then select Hide Command Labels.
Repeat to un-hide them. You can reset all tabs to their original state, or you can reset select tabs to their original state. A built-in control is a control that already appears in Backstage view. If you want to position controls before or after built-in controls, you must use Ribbon XML.
