Posted 12 December – AM. Hello all and sorry if posting this in the wrong place but recently I’ve needed to reinstall my windows 10 x I downloaded the media creation tool for windows 10 and whipped out my trusty ole 4gb usb stick. Apparently it now requires 8gb to download and its 3am, i dont have a usb higher than that and I need my computer working by tomorrow morning.
After a few hours of fumbling around, I opted to download the windows iso instead using the media tool. The latest version as of december is 3. Using the rufus usb tool, you can actually use the iso file and it will create a bootable usb even if it’s less than 8gb like the official microsoft tool requires, so long as it’s atleast 4gb, or rather 3.
Even the webpage for rufus does not advertise this. This is actually probably known by everyone who is more experienced than me with computers but during those few hours it took me to find this out, a lot of that was on google and I didn’t see anything like this. Anyways, if anyone ever stumbles scross this searching on google like I hoped to find, I hope this helps you all and thanks. Edited by hamluis, 19 October – PM.
Posted 12 December – PM. Yea, this is true. You don’t even need rufus. Just mount the iso, and copy all files to thumbdrive. Posted 18 October – AM. Now that’s what I wanted to know, thank you! Then restart computer and choose USB to boot from. And like xrobwx has asked, you’ve done this? So what are you trying to say? There is a great selection of software that accomplishes the task of creating a bootable USB stick, but Rufus is easy to use and very compatible with a wide variety of ISO images.
Of course I have done this. What do you think Rufus is? It is an executable made of commands already found in Windows. All you do is copy the files as I instructed in my previous post to a properly formatted USB stick, and you can boot from it. It is as simple as that. Your method sounds nice, but it just does not work in real life. You just don’t know how to copy and paste. The software a person uses to create a portable USB drive is contained in Windows. Format fat32, copy, paste.
So before you say it does not work you should at least try it. One more thing. I am NOT saying you shouldn’t use Rufus or any other 3rd party tools, I am just saying you don’t need to.
Ask yourself this very simple question: Why would Microsoft build an Operating System without the tools necessary to install it? Posted 19 October – PM.
This did not work for me. SO, I had to fire up Powershell and try to format the usb to Fat32,. Clear-Disk -Number 1 -RemoveData this will erase all data on selected drive. It did not work. All to no avail. It’s one program, and it has worked for thousands of people, time and time again.
This forum is for helping people, people more often than not that have very little computer skills. Rufus or one of the other utilities just seems easier. It would be helpful to others if you would further explain how you got the USB to format to Fat32 so easily.
The simple way you explained it above doesn’t work for me on Win 10 Pro. Community Forum Software by IP. Sign In Create Account. Javascript Disabled Detected You currently have javascript disabled.
